HERMIT

Many years ago, there lived a hermit in a forest in Sumatra. He did not grow food but depended on the jungle fruit to survive. Soon, there was a drought, and all the plants and fruit trees in the jungle died.

The old man had nothing to eat now, so he turned to become a beggar. He went to a nearby village trying to get food. At first, the villagers were happy to help him. However, when he came regularly, they refused to give him any more food. They told him to grow his own food.

One day, while the hermit was sitting in his hut, sad and hungry, he began to think about growing his own food. Just then, a boatman stopped by and took a pity on the hermit. Then he gave him some “paddy” seeds.

Before the boatman went away, he said, “These seeds will grow and give you everlasting harvest if you work very hard. If you are tired of the work, the “paddy” plants will turn into weeds.”

The old hermit worked hard to clear the land and sowed the seeds before the rain came. Strangely, after a short period of time, the “paddy” was ready for harvesting. The old man got a lot of rice from the harvest. After each harvest, the plants grew again right away.

When the villagers heard about the hermit and his wonderful “paddy”, they flocked to his “paddy” field and took home as much “paddy” as they could.

One day, being very tired of harvesting the paddy,  he shouted, “Oh stop growing, you wretched thing!” As soon as he had said this, the “paddy” plants turned into weeds.

The Chipmunk That Ran Away

Once upon a time, there was a nervous little chipmunk. She was always afraid that something bad happened to her.
One day, she heard a little noise. It was really only an apple that fell to the ground.
But the little Chipmunk was afraid and said “The sky is falling in.” Then she ran away as fast as she could go.

Soon she met an old brother Chipmunk, who asked, “Where are you running to, little Chipmunk?”
And the little Chipmunk answered, “The sky is falling in, and I am running away.”
“The sky is falling in?” said the old brother Chipmunk. And he told the story to his brother chipmunk, until at last there were a hundred brother Chipmunks shouting, ”The sky is falling in.”
Soon the larger animals heard what the Chipmunks were saying. The Deer, the  heep, the Pig, the Camel, the Tiger, and the Elephant began to say, “The sky is falling in.”

Then the wise Lion heard all the noise and wanted to know what was happening. He stopped all the animals and asked, “What are you saying?” The brother Chipmunks said, “Oh we heard it from that little Chipmunk!” And the Lion said, “Little Chipmunk, what made you say that the sky was falling in?”
And the little Chipmunk said, “I saw it there near the tree.”

“Well,” said the Lion, “Come with me and I will show you how something”.
“Now get on my back.” The Lion took her on his back, and asked the animals to stay where they were until they returned. Then he showed the little Chipmunk that the apple had fallen to the ground. This made the noise that had made her afraid. The little Chipmunk said, “Oh, I see. The sky is not falling in.”
The Lion said, “Let’s go back and tell the other animals.”

So they went back. At last all the animals knew that the sky was not falling in.

What is an Iceberg?

An iceberg is a great piece of ice floating in the sea. ‘Berg’ is the German word for ‘mountain.’ In the
coldest parts of the earth, around the North and South Poles, land and sea are both covered by layers of ice, more than 300 metres deep at the centre.

Tongues of ice, called glaciers, stretch out into the open sea. The sea water melts the bottom parts of these glaciers, then the top part moves into the water with a great noise. The great piece of ice sinks for a short time under the surface, then it rises again, and floats away as a new iceberg. Some icebergs are many miles long, and travel for thousands of miles and several years before they finally melt. The part
of an iceberg which can be seen above the water is only about one-ninth of the total size. The rest is hidden underthe waves.
One of the world’s worst disasters at sea was in 1912 when the liner ‘Titanic’ hit an iceberg and sank on her first journey, killing hundreds of passengers.

Goldilocks And The Three Bears

Once there were three bears that lived in a house in the woods: a papa bear, a mama bear, and a baby bear. One morning they decided to take a walk before breakfast to let their porridge cool.

A little girl named Goldilocks lived with her mother nearby. Goldilocks took a walk through the woods and found the bear’s house. She smelled the porridge in the kitchen and went inside. Goldilocks tasted the porridge in each bowl and finally ate up the porridge in the small bowl.

Then she sat on a big chair, but she didn’t like it, because it was hard.
Afterwards she sat on the small chair, and it was just right. But while she was sitting on it she broke it. After eating the porridge, Goldilocks felt full and sleepy, and then she went upstairs. There she found a small bed. She lay down on it and fell asleep.

While she was sleeping, the three bears came home. When they went into the kitchen, they got very surprised. Someone had tasted their porridge, even eaten up baby bear’s porridge, while they were taking a walk. Moreover the poor baby bear was upset when he found that his little chair broke into pieces. When they went upstairs, they found out that Goldilocks was sleeping. Baby bear cried out, “Someone has been sleeping in my bed and here she is!”

Goldilocks woke up when she saw the three bears; she jumped out of bed and ran out of the house to her home. Never again did she make herself at home in anyone else’s house.

"I'm an honest man," said the beggar defiantly. "Let's take this matter to the court!" In the court, the judge patiently listened to both sides of the story and said, "I believe you both. Justice is possible! Merchant, you stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of gold. Well, that's a considerable cost. But the purse the beggar found had only 100 pieces of gold. Therefore, it couldn't be the one you lost."

Thunder and Lightning

Lightning is a sudden, violent flash of electricity between a cloud and the ground, or from cloud to cloud. A lightning fl ash, or bolt, can be several miles long. It is so hot, with an average temperature of 34,000° Centigrade, that the air around it suddenly expands with a loud blast. This is the thunder we hear.

Lightning occurs in hot, wet storms. Moist air is driven up to a great height. It forms a type of cloud called cumulonimbus. When the cloud rises high enough, the moisture freezes and ice crystals and snowfl akes are formed. These begin to fall, turning to rain on the way down. This rain meets more moist air rising, and it is the friction between them which produces static electricity. When a cloud is fully charged with this electricity, it discharges it as a lightning flash.

Bali has perfected the art of keeping its guests happy.

The beach is a major factor in any island holiday and Bali has a coastline which offers every possible water activity including surfing some of the best waves in the world, swimming with dolphins, cruises, snorkelling, diving, sailing and parasailing. For snorkelling and diving, the closest spots to Kuta are Benoa and Sanur beaches where all the relevant equipment can be hired.

Further afield, good destinations include Pulau Serangan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan in the south, Padang Bai, Candidasa, Tulamben and Amed in the east, Lovina, in the north and the amazing Pulau Menjangan in the northwest.

Bali's waves are world famous and range from safe beach breaks for beginners like Kuta to the awesome swells at Padang Padang, Uluwatu and Nusa Lembongan, which regularly attract the pros. Beginners should respect the sea and stay within depth to start with as the current can be very strong. Apart from Kuta and Legian beaches, Medewi is also good for beginners. For the more experienced, Nusa Dua has a number of breaks as does Sanur; Canggu, Ketewel and the area around the airport are also popular with experienced surfers.

My Horrible Experience

Let me remind you my experience during an earthquake last week. When the earthquake happened, I was on my car. I was driving home from my vocation to Bali. Suddenly my car lunched to one side, to the left. I thought I got flat tire. I did not know that it was an earthquake. I knew it was an earthquake when I saw some telephone and electricity poles falling down to the ground, like matchsticks.

Then I saw a lot of rocks tumbling across the road. I was trapped by the rock. Even I could not move my car at all. There were rocks everywhere. There was nothing I could do but left the car and walked along way to my house, in the town.

When I reached my town, I was so surprised that there was almost nothing left. The earthquake made a lot of damage to my town. Although nothing was left, I thanked God that nobody was seriously injured.

My Embarrasing Experience

Today was a really hot day. After I had had my lunch, I went to the town square to watch
a local singing contest. I went there alone.

Arriving there, I chose a place under a big tree. I thought it could save me from the strong sunlight. I actually did not really pay attention to the contest. I just went there to avoid a boring time at home.
Suddenly, I found myself behind a young boy. I was really sure that he was my

classmate, Andi. I pinched him a little and called his name. The boy was surprised. When he turned around, I finally realized that he was not my classmate. I could not say a word. That moment was just embarrassing.

Camping

Last weekend, my friends and I went camping. We reached the camping ground after we walked for about one and a half hour from the parking lot. We built the camp next to a small river. It was getting darker and colder, so we built a fire camp.

The next day, we spent our time observing plantation and insects while the girls were preparing meals. In the afternoon we went to the river and caught some fish for supper. At night, we held a fire camp night. We sang, danced, read poetry, played magic tricks, and even some of us performed a standing comedy.

On Monday, we packed our bags and got ready to go home.

Home Industry

Not far from the place I live, there is a home industry, it is BUANA INDAH and this name is quite well known in my hometown and the neighboring cities. It produces indoor and outdoor furniture mostly made of wood.

That this industry is big enough is a fact. The proof is that this industry employs more than a hundred workers and the production keeps increasing year by year. Furthermore, recently this industry has exported its products overseas.

This industry occupies a large area. Moreover, it is located in a strategic place, precisely near the main road, so that it is not difficult to sell their products and the buyers will be easy to reach that place.

At the front part of this place, there is a large showroom. In this room, the owner displays the products. The design of the furniture is not out of date. That the competition among the furniture producers is very tight is a fact, so that the company keeps developing the new and modern designs.

How to Make a Milkshake

The ingredients that you need to make a milkshake are:

    4 cups vanilla ice cream
    2 cups milk
    4 teaspoons chocolate sauce (optional)
1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries

Now, follow these steps to make a milkshake.

Place milkshake glasses into the freezer. Using cold glasses will help the shake stay cool to give you time to enjoy. Leave for up to an hour if possible.
Soften ice cream. It is easier to make a shake when the ice cream is slightly soft. Take the ice cream out of the freezer a few minutes before making your shake.
Place the ingredients into a blender. Mix the ice cream, milk and added flavors into the blender. Blend on high for one minute. Don’t leave in the blender for longer or the shake will melt quickly.
Pour shakes into frosty glasses. Take the glasses out of the freezer as soon as the blending is complete. Then pour the shake mixture in.
Drop a straw into the shake, then enjoy. You can sip a shake right from the glass but somehow the straw adds to the flavor and the experience.

How to Make Ice Cream

You need these ingredients to make ice cream:

2 cups milk (not skim) or cream
    2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract (can substitute other flavoring.)
Several cups of Ice (the smaller the pieces, the better)
1 cup salt (rock salt is best, but table salt can also be used)

You need these supplies to make ice cream

Tub or large coffee can to hold salt and ice
Glass bowl or small coffee can
    Electric mixer or whisk
    Ice cream scoop
    Storage container for freezer

Here are the instructions that you must follow to make ice cream

Setting up the cooling apparatus. Stir ice and salt in the larger container. Double-check that the small container will fit into the larger one even with the ice.
Combine the ingredients. Mix together the milk, sugar, and vanilla in the glass bowl. Then, set this bowl in the tub filled with ice and rock salt, making sure that the salt water does not spill into the bowl. Instead of a glass bowl and tub, you can also use a small coffee can inside a large coffee can.
Mix the ice cream. Mix the ingredients in the small container vigorously. The salty ice mixture will cool the mixture down until it turns into ice cream. Mix very thoroughly. If you're using a whisk instead of an electric mixer in your glass bowl, you'll have to stir very hard, or ice crystals will form in the ice cream. If you are using the coffee can method, make sure both cans are well sealed, and then roll and shake to mix the ice cream mixture. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes to stir the ice cream using either method. Stir until it is free from ice crystals and is the right consistency.
Storage and serving. If you don't eat the ice cream right away, be sure to store it in the freezer so that it doesn't melt.

A Legend of Candy Cane

A candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ.
He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the church, and firmness of the promises of God.
The candy maker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior. It also represents the staff of the "Good Shepherd" with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.
Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes. He used the tree small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Jesus on the Cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life, if only we put our faith and trust in Him. Unfortunately, the candy became known as a Candy Cane - a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time. But the meaning is still there for those who "have eyes to see and ears to hear".

Then Snow white ad the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.

Article "A/An" dan "The"

Pengertian Article

Padanan kata untuk article bahasa Inggris a/ an/ the memang ada dalam bahasa Indonesia, tapi penggunaanya tidak sepenting seperti artikel a/an/the dalam bahasa Inggris.

Tidak demikian halnya dengan article a/ an/ thebahasa Inggris.

Ketiadaan atau kesalahan penggunaan article the sangat memungkinkan terjadinya kesalahpahaman.

Contoh:
Jack : Look! There is a girl standing near the library. She is cute, isn't she?
John: I know the girl. She is my sister's colleague.

Article a-an

  • Artikel a/ an terletak sebelum kata benda. Article a/an hanya me 'modify' (menerangkan) kata benda tunggal.
  • Article a/ an bisa berarti : satu ---> suatu/ sebuah/ seekor/ seorang/ …
  • A /an digunakan untuk :

    Contoh:
A whale is a mammal. = Whales are mammals. (Paus adalah mamalia)
A puppy is a young dog. = Puppies are young dogs. (Puppy adalah anak anjing)
An elephant is a very large plant-eating mammal. = Elephants are very large plant-eating mammals.
A giraffe eats plants. = Giraffes eat plants. (Jerapah makan tanaman)
    Contoh:
I saw a boy in the street. He is wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts.
A girl is standing near the cashier. The girl looks very busy with her shopping.
Bunyi konsonan bahasa Imggris adalah /b/, /d/ , /f/, /g/, /h/, /k/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /p/, /r/, /s/, /t/, /v/, /w/, /j/, /z/, /ŋ/, /ð/, /θ/, /ʒ/, /ʃ/, /ʧ/, /ʤ/ /x/
    Contoh: a corner, a mountain
  • Article an digunakan sebelum kata benda yang dimulai dengan huruf berbunyi vowel dan diphtong Bunyi vowel bahasa Inggris adalah /ɑ:/,/ʌ/, /ɔ:/, /ɒ/, /ɜ:/, /e/, /æ /, /ə/, /i:/, /i/, /ɪ/, /u:/, /ʊ/, /u/, sedangkan bunyi diphtong bahasa Inggris adalah: /aɪ/, /aʊ/, /eə/, /eɪ/, /əʊ/, /ɔɪ/, /ɪə/,/iə/, /ʊə/, /uə/, /aɪə/ , /eɪə/, /əʊə/ /ɔɪə/
Contoh: an elephant; anapple; an onion; an uncle; anumbrella
    Contoh: an hour (1 jam), dibaca : /ən aʊə/

    a uniform (sebuah seragam)
a home (sebuah rumah tempat tinggal)
    a university (sebuah universitas)
    a half (setengah)

an umbrella → a white umbrella
an apple → a red apple
